Tygers of Instruction

The title, The Tygers of Instruction (sic) is a take on the Blake poem, which seemed an apt metaphorical description for the intensity I found in the schools of Makoko. Makoko is a huge illegal floating township built on stilts and floats out over the sea outside Lagos, Nigeria. Makoko has no state provision of education. The film was shot with Professor James Tooley who wanted to show how private schools had developed in Makoko to provide basic schooling for a population which although poor, is determined to give their children the start in life that they had not had.
